4th grade gets visit from Trombonist!

Fourth graders last week got an exciting visit from a trombone player! As part of our LINK UP program, we have been paired with a mentor from the West Shore Symphony who will be working with our students to prepare them for their symphony field trip. His name is Mr. Spencer and he is an extremely fun and talented trombone player who plays with the West Shore Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, and teaches at Hope College.

Mr. Spencer talked to the students about the trombone, showed the students different sizes of trombones, played a wide variety of mutes for the trombone, and even had student volunteers practice "buzzing" their lips like brass players have to do to play their instruments. Mr. Spencer also helped the students with their interactive song "Simple Melody" which we will be playing on recorders and singing along with the orchestra. It was very exciting to hear the students sing their part along with Mr. Spencer's part as he played it on the trombone.

Mr. Spencer will be returning on March 20 to talk to the students once more about the orchestra, what its like to be in an orchestra, and work more with our recorder parts. We can't wait!!
