Since the beginning of January, all of the classes have been doing instrument units.
Kindergarten:
Kindergarten has been playing lots of classroom instruments! Maracas, drums, rhythms sticks and glockenspiels have been hit and shaken each day along with learning familiar nursery rhymes and songs. Students have done variations of both the Farmer In the Dell and even learned that Old MacDonald had a band! What fun!
1st Grade:
First grade started by learning the story of the Little Red Hen. However, our little red hen story transformed into a new version when she meets instruments like a violin, trombone, flute, trumpet and clarinet. We also created our own song using classroom instruments!
2nd Grade:
Second graders have been learning about the four different families of instruments. We have used classroom instruments to explore different ways to play percussion and even got to play the panpipes during our woodwind exploration!
3rd Grade:
Third graders have been going more in depth into the four families of instruments and learning what characteristics each family has. The highlight so far was creating our own percussion pieces in class!
4th Grade:
Fourth graders are busy learning about the orchestra and working with Carnegie Hall's LINK UP program as they prepare for their trip to the West Michigan Symphony in April.
5th Grade:
Fifth graders have been combining music with art as they spent time drawing pictures to go along with "The Firebird Suite" by Stravinsky. This piece will be performed by the Grand Rapids Symphony during their 5th grade concert which takes place in Holland in March. They are also working at learning more about the symphony.
