4th grade LINK UP concert!

Yesterday, our 4th graders participated in an amazing concert called LINK UP. This program is created through Carnegie Hall and partners with the West Michigan Symphony in Muskegon. The West Michigan Symphony is one of only a select number of orchestras across the United States chosen to work with Carnegie Hall to provide this interactive concert to area students. We are so lucky to be close enough to participate in this!

We traveled to the beautiful and historic Frauenthal Theatre in Muskegon and were treated to an amazing concert! We have been preparing for this concert for many months now and the students were so excited!

Beginning in January, we have been working on learning about orchestras, instrument families, improving our singing skills, learning how to play the recorder, learning to read and play notes and being introduced to various composers and repetoire. Our theme this year was "The Orchestra Moves" and we learned that orchestras can move in many different ways. We move our fingers, the notes move, the dynamics and tempos can move, and we can even move our bodies. The host of the concert was "Professor Newton" and he helped the students experience all the ways we move. We were treated to various dancers who showed how our bodies moved and he even sang the operatic song "Toreador" from Carmen to show us how different parts of the music move.

This is a highly interactive concert and the students participated also by singing along to many of the songs, listening and even moving their own bodies to different pieces. The highlight was being able to play our recorders along with they symphony on two different pieces.

The finale had the students up and out of their seats as they clapped energetically to "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Confetti canons and a light show on the ceiling and walls of the theatre surprised and delighted the students. It will be an experience they will not forget!
